We understand that not everybody has the time to sit in front of their computer continuously refreshing their dashboard, and this is why we recommend the use of RSS feed readers, which can check for you and send you timely notifications when they detect new jobs – even if you're busy with other tasks! To see a job, you would have to load your dashboard at the exact same moment or right after a customer places an order. If you are only checking your dashboard occasionally throughout the day, it's normal for you not to see jobs. As a result, most jobs get picked up quickly and don't usually linger long on the dashboard. How it works: whenever a customer places an order, it becomes available to all eligible translators at the same time and whoever picks up the job first gets to work on the translation. If you feel that the Linux user should be required to deliberately provide a password for local control too - that's the debate - then logically the same requirement should be applied to Mac and Windows users so you suggest to revert my chmod 664 on /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg, but if I do this I'm pretty sure I will get again the "gui_rpc_auth.cfg exists but can't be read".The message appearing or not depends on who or what issued it, but the effect is the same. Additional security, as you suggest, is warranted for a client running on a remote machine, possibly headless and without human oversight. Giving local users (effectively) password-free access to view and manage the BOINC client running on their own local machine is not a great security risk - the client itself is effectively firewalled away from the rest of the operating system and local storage outside the data folder tree. My personal view is that the original developers got it about right. The Linux GUI was never given this ability, and so most Linux installations started with an empty password file - until the May update. Mac and Windows users wishing to control a remote machine have to jump through additional security processes. They took the decision - pragmatically, but as I said, debateably - that the Mac and Windows GUIs would be able to read and use the password on the local machine, without user action. The BOINC developers considered two cases: BOINC running on the local machine (localhost), and BOINC running on a remote machine ( Controlling BOINC remotely) May I point you to my analysis in - the same PR that I mentioned earlier? For me the whole concept of someone else reading the Client's private file is only added by the Linux packagers and it's another case where the convenience vs security decision goes in the wrong direction. The Manager has the ability to read the password from a file but I don't think that was meant to read the Client's password file but one provided by the user. In fact that's what I do, but I'm sure that's still not how it was intended to work. You could add authorised users to the boinc group as you suggested and then allow only those to read the password file. To make that work the password has to be secret, enforcing a password and then allowing everybody to look it up is just absurd. The user has to provide the password to prove they're authorised to control the Client. The Linux tools for ensuring that the Manager can read - and thus supply - the requisite password from gui_rpc_auth.cfg are woefully inadequate. No, the Manager should not need, and not be able, to read that file at all. This may require a Linux restart - I'm not an expert on Linux. Add the password to the command line, thusīoincmgr -password=passwordAn alternative technique is to add your user account name (since you are the one running the manager) to the 'boinc' user group, so that your copy of the manager can read boinc's files. Then, find the launcher for your BOINC manager (terminal or icon - whichever you use). Open gui_rpc_auth.cfg as a text file (may need sudo). The most reliable way of fixing this problem is to provide the new password yourself. That won't be made obvious in any messages. It depends on your distribution and installation method whether the manager can find and read the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file. Try the manager again (but don't hold your breath). After that restart, the client will be expecting those contents to be sent as the password. ![]() There is a password in use to protect the communications between the client and manager, and you have to ensure that both components are using the same, current, password.įirst - ensure that the client has been restarted since the contents of gui_rpc_auth.cfg were last altered or made readable. ![]() This is a very well known, very common, error message - and it's completely false. ![]() Several were tracked live with minimal studio tweaking occurring afterwards, and others were built over time with a more fastidious approach. They shared a vision for the finished album that would give it a more modern sound than Holcomb’s previous recordings, with his songs balancing the line of large, layered anthems with nuanced singer-songwriter moments-or, as he says, “expanding the emotional architecture of the songs so that the bigger themes and emotions would have space to hit harder.” Having always allowed his band-including Rich Brinsfield on bass, Nathan Dugger on guitar, and session drummer Will Sayles-to play by its own rules, Holcomb and company again embraced that ethos and remained open-minded for the inclusion of any instrument, tweak, technique, or style as long as it served the human element and earnest feeling of each song. He also co-wrote the song “Bittersweet” with producer and songwriter Cason Cooley (Ingrid Michaelson, American Authors), loving the process and result so much that he invited Cooley to produce the entire album.Ĭooley took Holcomb and the Neighbors to the esteemed Echo Mountain studio in Asheville, North Carolina, to record in January of 2019. From working with the legendary Lori McKenna on several songs and country songwriting star Natalie Hemby on another, to previous tourmate Sean McConnell as well as Zach Williams of The Lone Bellow, Holcomb learned how to reap the benefits of sharing without being territorial while ultimately serving his own vision for the pieces at large. Even though he was writing about his own unique experiences, Holcomb discovered that the support of other trusted ears and hearts proved valuable beyond his estimation. To assist him with the scope of the challenge, Holcomb turned to his friends and peers for collaboration-in fact, six of Dragons’s ten songs are co-writes. Inspired to “throw off some self-imposed shackles” in terms of subject matter and style, the new material was shaping up to point him in an altogether new and exciting direction-and perhaps because he had opened himself up to writing while his “normal” life was rolling along, the songs began to take on a more intimate point of view. Where his previous work was written more in lump sum moments during specific blocks of time set aside for creative outburst, he found that spending two to three days each week with his guitar in hand and working on new material yielded better results in both quantity and diversity. So when it came time to begin work on a new album, he forced himself to try something different and to mine untapped territory-and in a manner he had never before attempted.Īs Holcomb embarked on the tour for Souvenir in 2017, he disciplined himself to write new songs in a more consistent manner than his past efforts. From his position as curator and entrepreneur with various undertakings-from co-creator of the successful, diverse Moon River Music Festival that makes its sold-out home in Chattanooga this Fall, to the Magnolia Record Club vinyl subscription program that he founded and curates on a monthly basis-to his role of husband for the last 14 years and father to three children, Holcomb cites the nature of his life of late as equal parts “collaborative” and “chaotic.” Having released a full-length Neighbors album, Souvenir, in 2017 to much acclaim, a co-released EP with Johnnyswim, Goodbye Road, in 2018, enjoyed the stripped-down and mostly sold-out “You & Me” tour with his wife, singer Ellie Holcomb, in 2018 and early 2019, and opened larger shows for Willie Nelson and the Zac Brown Band with The Neighbors, Holcomb’s legend and reach continues to grow. For the last decade, the Tennessee-based musician has established himself as one of Americana and Southern roots music’s freshest upstarts, building his following and critical appeal with every release, show, and venture. The story of Dragons is the culmination of myriad events, connections, challenges, and years of hard, determined work for Holcomb, both as a bandleader and a family man. With its modern production, careful sense of craft and collaboration, and rafter-reaching anthems carrying profound, intentional lyrics, the album represents Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors’s biggest moment yet, a powerful portrait stretched across a wide sonic canvas. ![]() But with his new album, Dragons, his subject material finds the singer using a finer brush and mixing more of the joys, struggles, and specific moments of his own life than ever before to help him paint his masterpieces and connect with fans on a universal level. ![]() Drew Holcomb’s songs have always charged his listeners’ hearts and minds while inspiring them to think, feel, dance, and love. ![]() The company's project was later reportedly shut down by the U.S. A wave of negative publicity ensued, with coverage on BuzzFeed News, CNBC, the BBC, and TechCrunch.
